Like your favourite campsite, Pech Charmant<\/strong>, many place names, villages and family names in P\u00e9rigord are made up of \u2018pech\u2019 or \u2018ac\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2018Pech\u2019 is the French transcription of the Occitan pueg<\/em> (hence the Spanish puig<\/em> and Catalan pujol<\/em>), itself taken from the Latin podium<\/em>: a flat, elevated place (our French \u201cpodium\u201d).<\/strong> And by extension, an estate situated on high ground.<\/p>\n

The suffix \u2018ac\u2019 is also a Gallo-Roman heritage, more specifically Gallic.<\/p>\n

Acos, acum<\/em> designated a place, an area and then, by extension, a farm.\"\" <\/strong><\/p>\n

Associated with the owner’s surname, it was used to describe the property. In Roman Gaul, the word indicated the location of a villa,<\/strong> a rural residence and farm characteristic of the Empire, comprising dwellings and farm buildings.<\/p>\n

Montignac<\/a>, Beynac<\/a>, Carsac<\/a>, Salignac…<\/strong> there’s no doubt that the multitude of villages in the region have their roots in the properties of Romanised Gaul.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Their roots are to be found in the vast cultural heritage of the langue d’Oc<\/strong> which, in the Middle Ages, was spoken and covered the southern part of what is now France (as opposed to the langue d’O\u00ef in the north).<\/p>\n

Largely inherited from Latin, the complex language of the troubadours<\/em> has given today’s French many of its words. Coming to Pech Charmant is quite a journey! A good base camp for exploring the P\u00e9rigord Noir region<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n
