The world capital of Prehistory with only 800 inhabitants!
Le Pech Charmant is located just 2 km from the village "Les Eyzies", which has become world famous for the discovery of numerous caves with prehistoric paintings, such as the well-known cave Le Font de Gaume”. The Vézere valley with its numerous caves is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The largest number of these caves are in and near Les Eyzies. Even the cave de La Mouthe which is only 500 meters from the site is on this list. Unfortunately it is closed to the public.
In addition, the first skeletal remains of our ancestors, the Cro-Magnon man, were found here.
The National Museum of Prehistory is located in the center of the village and partly accommodated in the old fortress which is built against the beautiful rock wall. In the immediate vicinity are several prehistoric places to admire, such as La Madeleine and Roque St Christophe. Because Les Eyzies has a lot to offer to tourists, it is a lively village with many restaurants and tourist shops. In summer, various village festivals are held with fireworks, music and of course good food.
In addition, you will find in Les Eyzies: 2 bakeries, a butcher, a supermarket, a post office, the tourist office and 3 ATMs.
